About the Site
The purpose of this website is to help people better understand the Epic of Gilgamesh. It can be used to get information about the epic and give readers a better understanding of the story. The site includes many pictures and graphics to help give the readers a better understanding of what is taking place. A soundtrack can also be found on here, which includes songs picked that we believed described certain characters or situations in the epic.
The Epic of Gilgamesh is about a man named Gilgamesh. He was two thirds god, one third man. He was the king of the Uruk, he had everything in the world going for him, but he was rude and cruel to his subjects. To save the people of Uruk from Gilgamesh, the gods sent a man by the name of Enkidu to earth to help keep Gilgamesh under control. Gilgamesh and Enkidu becomes best friends, and Enkidu tells Gilgamesh of this monster named Humbaba who guarded the Cedar Forest. Together they slay the monster but the God Anu was not pleased with this and sent the bull of heaven to earth to punish Gilgamesh. The bull was also killed by them. The gods decided that one of the heros must die for their actions and Enkidu falls ill and dies after twelve days. After his friends death Gilgamesh goes on a search for immortality to escape his friends fate. Gilgamesh goes on a journey to meet Utnapishtim who has gained immortality from the gods. Utnapishtim tells Gilgamesh of a plant at the bottom of the sea that can restore ones youth. Gilgamesh goes into the sea and retrieves the plant. On his way back to Uruk, Gilgamesh stops to bath and leaves the plant unattended. While he wasn't paying attention a serpent steals the plant. Gilgamesh was heartbroken by this lose but goes on to become a great leader or Uruk.
