Forever Young; Jay-Z
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLtSKC-19BI
This song describes Gilgamesh because throughout the story he is on a search for immortality. Gilgamesh does not want to grow up and die which the song describes. The title and chorus of it relates to Gilgamesh’s way of thinking throughout the story. He wants to be “Forever Young”, which makes this the most perfect song relating to Gilgamesh.
No Mercy: T.I. Ft. The Dream
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NX7m0W8fkf4
This songs fits Humbaba because in the story when Gilgamesh and his sidekick Enkidu
go to kill him he pleads and begs for his life. Thinking they were protecting their peers they show him no mercy and kill him right then and there. They did not care about who he was or what he did as the guardian of the cedar forest, they just wanted to show their power over him and they did.
“Champagne Supernova” by Oasis (Gilgamesh)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R04sLCmtz3E
We chose the song “Champagne Supernova” by Oasis to represent Gilgamesh. We picked this song because some lyrics can represent immortality, how Gilgamesh changes from a respected king into a self obsessed king and, the mesopotamian ideal that after death you just go under the earth. The lyrics that represent this are “How many special people change, how many lives are living strange.”Gilgamesh changing. “Someday you will find me, caught beneath the landslide” Afterlife. “Wake up the dawn and ask her why,a dreamer dreams she never dies.”Immortality.
“God’s Gonna Cut You Down” by Johnny Cash (Enkidu)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Bwfm7-uNS4
We picked “God’s Gonna Cut You Down” by Johnny Cash to represent Gilgamesh’s best friend Enkidu. This selection is based off of the “Battle of Humbaba” chapter where Enkidu is at first concerned with Gilgamesh fighting Humbaba then after he realizes that Gilgamesh can defeat him he convinces him to kill the protector of the forest. After this incident the gods basically tell him that they are going to kill him and send him to the underworld. This entire song is about Gods killing people and sending them to the underworld.
“Voodoo Child” by Jimi Hendrix (Ishtar)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMyH4XTlVgs
We chose the song “Voodoo Child” by Jimi Hendrix to represent Ishtar. Ishtar was the daughter of the mesopotamian god, Anu; after Gilgamesh refuses to marry her she runs to her father and tells her that Gilgamesh has disrespected her and forces Anu to give her the “Bull of Heaven” and if he refuses she will break open the doors of the underworld. For this reason I would depict her as a bad child which is a synonym for a voodoo child.
